Ok. So I got this black chick from a feed store. She was supposed to be an Australorp. But then she started growing feathers. I'm baffled as to what she could be.

Any guesses what she is? She's about 2 months old - maybe more.

It does kinda look like a silver-laced Wyandotte, but the coloring is reversed -black feather with white edging. Hmmm, maybe it's a mix -did the Feed Store get them from a breeder or a hatchery?

She's pretty though, whatever she is!

Looks more like a Australorp-SLW mix. Might not even be 50/50 mix because my 50% Australorp mixes tend to nearly pure black. There are dark eyes like an Australorp, however the legs appear to have some yellow instead of being black. The lacing pattern and yellow leg patches indicate some SLW heritage. She's 100% beautiful, though.

That's true! I don't think I've seen a SLW where hte edges of the feathers are reversed like that. That makes more sense! THanks SO much - off to do a search here for SLW pullet pics.

Beautiful bird. not sure what she is so i have no input on that but its funny how clueless feed stores can be about five years ago i bought three buetiful back chicks being told that they were barred rocks well they never got the white so then i was told that they were langshans well about three months ago i finaly found out what they truely were. low and behold the birds of my affection turned out to be australorps the funny how what we think were getting turns out to be some thing diffrent. well i wouldn't change a thing there were one of the best experiences of my life:D
