I'm having a heck of a time finding a good, higher-protein crumbles feed for my chicks. I keep reading all the threads about feed, but when I find one that sounds as if it would be what I'd be after, I can't find it locally..........and the freight for a 50 lb bag is pretty much the same price as the feed itself!

I live in central Oklahoma. (which may be part of the problem, in itself!)

I prefer an un-medicated feed. (they were inoculated) Based on what I'm reading on the forum, I want a 20% protein level. Prefer something without added calcium. Crumbles. (obviously) I'm eventually going to "free range" my chickens, so I'll want a really good, all-round, feed for when they get to the growing and laying feeds. I'm hoping to provide great tasting eggs....................would like to go organic, but have not decided on that point yet.

Can someone please help out a first-time chicken "farmer"?

I'll tell you this- my hens free-range from spring to fall, and I have been filling their feed maybe once a month! They don't even touch the stuff. If I have to be gone past coop-closing time, I don't let them out that day. They get mad an dump the feed all over the place- no matter what kind it is.

No, I haven't tried Purina because that wasn't one of the feeds in which I was interested.

HeHe................spiteful chickens, huh?

I got online and started calling suppliers of feed and got them to read me the contents cards. What I've finally decided on..........at least for now is Manna Pro Game Bird and Show Bird crumbles. It's 24% protein and soy based. I think that's the way I'm headed. Still have to make up my mind about the "organic vs non-organic" issue. But I think I'll be happy with this for now.
