I am planning to build a very small coop (big enough tfor 3-5 hens) with an attached run.

I was thinking that the food and water would be in the run not in the coop.

Is that acceptable or must the food and water be available in the coop?

Outside is fine as long as the chickens will never be locked in the coop for very long (like, not more than overnight). I don't like to have to go out there at the crack of dawn so I keep my water indoors - it also keeps algae from growing in the (white plastic) waterer in the summer.

You also have to think about whether mice and sparrows will be a problem, getting into the feed, and if so, whether that'll be more of an issue indoors or out.

Have fun,

Pat
