Depending on the type of feeder, the chickens like to get in and scratch the feed out or even flick it out with their beaks. Raising the feeder keeps the food clean from scratched up bedding and might save you some wasted feed from the flicking and scratching. Some folks hang their feeders to discourage mice and rats from taking feed.
