feeder for chickens and not birds

Sweet!

The egg laying is done by the time they are let out of the coop in the morning.

This 'fresh' water thing? I take two bottles of tap water to work with me and it seems to be fresh enough for me for a whole day. Why do my chooks need more than one fill of water per day? Surely if they are thirsty they will drink from the dog's bowl if need be.

I am not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean to fill it up or change it to clean water? My hens only have a small waterer and in 1-2 days use it up, i clean it of and refill it.

Oh O.K.

I have a 5 gallon plastic container cut in half which I refill with fresh water every day. I have two Rhode Island Reds.

It would appear, then, that this is sufficient?

As long as water is available and they are able to get to it, it is fine.

First day on the forum and I have already learned lots of stuff.

I really doubt it, from any feed i've had that is near them they don't bother it, they'd much rather eat seeds.

I have had my feed outside all the time except for when it rains. If you couldnt' keep yoru feed outside why woudl there be a range feeder

The birds do not bother my chickens at all and have never touched my feed unless i gave corn. Thats also what scratch is used for to thow out on the ground. Yes you may get the occasional bird to come say hi but they keep there distance becasue the chickens are "bigger" than they are and afraid to go near. Just my opinion on feeding outside.

If i do that will bird come in and eat alll the chickens food because the bird will eat my dog's food faster than they will

You must have really BIG wild birds or really SMALL dogs.

There is no way a bird gets near the dog food at my place (two Jack Russell Terriers) unless of course the bird is a chook!

Then it's a standoff! Chooks are bigger.

Seriously, what's wrong with adding a couple of ounces of extra food for the extra couple of birds and spreading it around the yard.

As far as runs vs. free range. Let them run free and chuckle at their antics.

Wild birds don't tend to mess with the chicken's feed, except the black birds. If i fill a dish outside under the tree, I've noticed atleast one blackbird (kinda convinced its the same one that steals dog food from the dogs dishes

) will come over there after the chickens and ducks are away and steal their treats and food a bit or two at a time. But just the blackbird(s) will do that.

Sparrows and finches much prefer coming up on my porch and cleaning up my cockatiels' messes of seeds and pellet mix. They sure are brave seeing as my cats love to sleep on top of the cockatiel's big rolling cage...

lol but as a general rule I seriously doubt wild birds are going to want to eat pelleted chicken feed, if anything they will be more likely to eat excess treats of grain/wheat or seed if you give it to your chickens.
