I use a round metal feed tray to feed my small flock and am getting tired of the gals getting in there and either scratching it out, or just beaking it out in general.

I was thinking I could just get out my angle grinder and cut a piece of 1/2" hardware cloth to fit over the top of the feed. My concern is that could result in a potential for injury. Option #2 might be better, get a lid for a 5 gallon bucket and drill out 1/2" holes.

Opinions?

Not to be harsh, but neither of your ideas sound good to me. I'm sure there are literally hundreds of ideas for feeders on here. Do a little searching..........you'll find one that works for you.

That's an interesting idea w the hardware cloth- so I'm guessing it fits inside the sides of the feed pan? And then it just sits on top of the feed lowering as the feed lowers? Sounds interesting, but I would be worried about a chicken poking out its eye on an edge of that stuff... It is dangerous! I have many a whole in my thumbs from hardware cloth! But perhaps your chickens are smarter than I am.
I'd be inclined to try the hardware cloth experiment.

I love my pvc feeder. Homemade with instructions from these forums. No mess, no wet food. Cheap and easy to build. Fill once a week.
You can see it behind the water bucket in this picture. Search for 5 gallon pvc bucket feeder or some such.

Yeah seen that design often even with trash cans or something larger. My hole driller set only goes up to around 1.5 inches so passed on this one. But thank you for the reply.
