My husband and I are preparing for our first chickens and we are getting the coop all set up. We made our own PVC pipe feeder and want to know what height to hang it. Since we want to hang it on the outside and the lower feeder arm will go through the hardware cloth to the inside, we want to cut only one hole which will be permanent. All sources I have found say to hang them "at the height of the chickens back". Well, we haven't owned chicken before and we don't have any yet, so we don't know what that height is! We are getting bantams so I assume that will be lower still. So does anyone have an approximate height of a bantams back (an actual measurement)???

I only have two bantums. They are Golden Dutch, about as small as them come and less than 6" tall at their backs. The little girls are in with the big chickens, so, I gave them a "booster seat" for them to hop up on to eat and drink. Just a couple of blocks of wood that they can reach the feed and water from. If, yours ends up too tall, there is one solution.
