Feeder - Waterer

25 sq ft is only enough space for 50 chicks for 2 weeks. Each chick's space needs doubles every week. The more you crowd them, the more likely you are to have problems (trampling, picking on each other, etc)

Space requirements are (I think, others will correct me if I'm wrong):
  • Week 1 - 1/4 sq ft per bird
  • Week 2 - 1/2 sq ft per bird
  • Week 3 - 1 sq ft per bird
  • Week 4 - 2 sq ft per bird
After this, they are probably feathered out enough that you could give them some outside space as well (unless it is really cold).

As for those feeders, I despise them. My chicks have always ended up burying them in their bedding and I have to dig them out 2-3 times a day which wastes feed in the bedding. I prefer hanging feeders like this one from tractor supply. They are less likely to spill the feed or get their bedding in it. I let it just barely hover over the bedding at first and move it up higher as they get older.
