Feeding and watering outside?

I have noticed that many of you do not have feed and water in the coop.
Why is this? I got my chicks in March and have always had feed and water
in the coop. When they are outside they always come in to eat and drink.

Mine have always been inside, too, but I have a good sized walkin coop. Part of the reason I think is to give more space in the coop, or because there just isn't room inside. Also to discourage rats and such from coming into the coop.

I'd have to build something to protect the food if I put it outside.
