Feeding bagged feed vs. foraging

I seldom loose hens now that dog is out and about. If hens go too far that dog does not protect, then give them more feed so they do not travel so much. Feral dogs are what I worry about most cause my dog may not be able to drive them off alone.

Some chickens are just better foragers than others. I think they all like to chase grasshoppers. I support foraging, cuts down on feed.

Mine go for grasshoppers too. THis time of year hens venture into heavy vegetation making tunnels. They are getting all sorts of insects although kinds I do not know.

My chickens are too, um, chicken to free range very effectively. They are in a grassy/weedy run for most of the day, and then free range all evening in the yard with us watching close by. We lost 3 to a raccoon a couple weeks ago, but I shot the raccoon that was stupid enough to try to come in the coop with me in there, and fixed the panel corner that he was lifting up.
