I have 10 day old chicks (5 Barred Rocks and 5 Rhode Island Reds Pullets). Everyone was eating starter food and had normal BM's. I thought they would like some bugs....so I caught some wild grain moths and fed them to the chicks. The Reds are afraid of new things and would eat them, but the Rocks loved them. After a few days of this I bought some meal worms from the store and fed them to the chicks (again only the Rocks ate them...Yummy. Now, I've noticed that at least one of the Rocks has diarrhea (light brown pudding). I've stopped the bug feeding for 2 days now with no improvement. I haven't seen any of the Reds break with diarrhea yet so I don't think it is contagious. I even looked under the microscope and didn't seen any coccidia. Everyone seems playful, still eating, and has energy. What can I do? Just stay on the "starter food" and wait, "feed yogurt or something", or "give medications"? Help.

I am definitely no expert, but yogurt in my girls usually leads to diarrhea, or at least less than solid poo, so unless you're thinking that probiotics would really help them I'd probably go with the starter food over yogurt. Some of mine have also had times in these first four weeks when they've had different consistencies than the rest, even when just on a constant diet of the starter feed and water for days, I think it's probably just normal variations. I've fed mine spiders (we've suddenly had SO many spiders in the house) and they seem to love them. I would've thought moths would be pretty tasty for them, but more of a fast food (high in fat). Wouldn't think harmful though.

Good luck!
