Feeding chicken egg shells

Is it ok to feed my chickens their egg shells and what for prep do I need to do before doing this?

I put mine on a plate and crush them with the bottom of a mason jar pretty small. Mine love it!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!! We throw ours in the compost as compost needs calcium, then buy the oyster shells. A 5lb bag seems to last nearly a year.

Welcome to BYC. I give mine boiled eggs with the shells. I just mash them up. They get this about once a week. I also keep oyster shell out for them 24/7.

Welcome to BYC! I didn't wash them unless the shells were really nasty.

We do. I put the shells in a bowl and boil up the water in the tea pot and submerge them. I like to think it cleans and sterilizes them. Later i come back, take them out and let them dry. Than i mash them up into small pieces.
