Feeding chickens

Hi, I am a newcomer. Have 6 chickens for eggs. (Got a home for the roosters.) They have 1 hour in the morning and 1-2 hours each afternoon/evening to eat in our large back yard. Their crops are visibly full near dark. Is it possible that they don't eat much of their regular feed because they have had enough to eat? ( yes we have a few worms and much foliage for them.) We monitor their feed and they rarely eat much of it.

Welcome to BYC!!
My flock will eat less chicken feed when they free range. They eat more chicken feed in the winter because they don't free range and they eat more when they are molting.

You should leave food out for them all day. As long as you’re not feeding them tons of treats, they should eat their feed as normal. But you don’t have to feed them twice a day - just make sure they have access to it all day long.
