Chickens do eat a lot! Especially at that age. I don't think I would switch to layer feed at that age. I usually switch when I get the first egg. Even if they do start laying as soon as you buy another bag of starter, they an live off of the starter a while. I think the only difference between chick and adult layer feed is the calcium and protein. If you have a chick feed that has a good protein percentage, you can use that there whole life and just add calcium chips. I do that with game bird starter. It has animal proteins which is great and I mix it with a low protein finisher to lower the protein content. The chicks get just the feed and the adults get calcium supplement. Been good so far'
