Feeding emus

We got our Emu when he was just a few days old.........cute little stripes and all. We started him out on Emu pellets from the feed store. But, we also noticed him more interested in dog food than his own. After experimenting w/ different brands, we ended up feeding him Ol Roy. He likes it best because it just rolls down his throat. We have "Emit" on a grass pasture, but he very seldom touches anything but his dog food. Emit just had his 22nd birthday just a few weeks back! Yes, he was born in 1991 and we hope he lives another 22 years. We have laughed at that bird and his personality more than I could ever tell you. He "sits" when we ask him to, just like a puppy. And he's soooooo mischievous. He'll grab garden gloves that we lay down and take off running. You can almost hear him laugh out loud.
I hope you have as much fun w/ yours as we do with Emit!

Thats what i was affraid of. No one carries the Ratite food up here in alaska, what can i feed them? I havent got them yet, i am trying to find a food supply first.
You can order the Mazuri ratite food online, a lot of times they offer free shipping, my mu eats the maintenance and the grower, shes old enough for the maintenance but prefers the taste of the grower she also helps herself to course 14 sheep sweet feed and shepherd 16 pellets and she gets lots of fruit and veggys everyday because I don't have good pasture.

Alaska!!

Hmmm . . . my two cents’ worth is:

I ruckon fresh greens are super important, and I suppose that those are hard-ish to get in Alaska. Wild birds get a remarkably 'zesty' diet. Not just fresh grass, but a wide array of fresh seeds and blossoms and berries.

Is there any way you could cultivate a bit of lawn for them?

Have you ever grown alfalfa sprouts? My hippy friends and I used to do it. We were never without a jar of sprouts on the kitchen windowsill.

If I went to Alaska, I’d be sprouting sprouts all the time: the seeds, which you can buy in bulk, sprout into a sprout that is super rich in a bunch of stuff that humans – and I bet emus – need. Ask your health food store about it.

We look forward to reports on your birds’ progress
