Feeding for show

I just use layer feed and the day before I head off for the show I feed scratch because it hardens the poop so it wont be all runny. And before anyone asks the corn wouldnt make them brassy that fast if its just for one day.

Now I know why most of the time I see the show birds being fed scratch while they're being exhibited, with the exception of a few folks that fed'em regular crumbles.

I feed the regular layer feed until the day before the show, then switch to chick starter and scratch.

The medicated chick starter helps keep cocci at bay under stressful situations and the scratch gives them a boost of energy. I do NOT feed the day of the show unless the birds are to be there overnight after judging. And only then do I feed after the judging has happened.

A bird with a full crop just doesn't pose as well as one that is a little hungry. By all means, feed the bird a small amount, but do not give so much that the bird will be "full".

THis will be fantastic for learning, I hope many more will post.

My daughter is "in charge" of the showing, and we don't have the slightest clue what we're doing but so far...

we have been supplementing with hard boiled egg daily in addition to the regular feed a couple months before the show. we've also been known to hand out sunflower seeds regularly....

I dunno if that is right or not.. everyone seems very healthy, big and beautiful...

I feed my show birds layer feed with a supplement called " super spur" It really helps them I have noticed a difference. I don't normally feed until after the judging.

In the case of exhibition barred rocks, fast feather growth is not what you want. It will skew the barring.

This I am aware of...but I don't raise barred rocks, I show silkies and polish
