Hi BO22!
I have been thinking along similar lines. I visited the county fair year before last and remember the BOs displayed as being HUGE! My hatchery birds are heathy, to be sure, but don't measure up size-wise to the ones I remember. The feed store around here orders from Privett. Perhaps the hatchery line isn't as robust as a breeder's line would be? My dressed roo's, at 5-6 months, are about 5-5 1/2 lbs.
Edited to add: This year the chickens are laying a bit later and the ones that hatched at the end of April till mid-May have just recently started laying. That seems to be the case with friends around here, as well. Year-old birds does seem late.
