We picked up 7 new birds for our growing flock. A pair of EE, 4 RIR hens a Barred Rock hen and an Austrolorp hen. The guy we picked the birds up said he has been feeding the chickens sweet feed. Everyone seems to be in decent health, they were all free ranged in his back yard.
We moved the 8 birds into a 4x12 coop and have started them on finisher feed with some grain scratch and veggies thrown in daily. My question is does the finished have enough protein in it since they were on nothing but sweet feed or did they get enough by being free ranged?
Behavior wise, they seem to be fine, there is a definate pecking order but I have not seen any fussing among them.Just wanting to make sure I get them all they need as we head into colder weather. My other hens are still laying everyday but in the 4 days we have had the new birds, no eggs as yet but we don't expect them to lay until their diet is better.
thanks

If they had adequate free range the sweet feed should have given them enough. How old are they, and how much protein is in the finisher you have? If they are at the point of lay the protein level should be 16 to 20%. If they were laying they may take a couple of weeks to settle in and start laying regardless of the diet.
