Feeding on the floor?

So I've noticed that the chickens get really excited about eating off the floor, like I noticed them shake their pellets out of the feeder onto the floor and then devour them whereas they weren't touching them in the feeder.
Should I just throw their pellets onto the floor or do that as well as leaving the feeders out in case I don't put enough down? I don't really know how much they eat a day as I just top up the feeders.
I know it's normal chicken behaviour and they do get treats like worms given that way, so I was wondering if they think they are more like treats being on the floor!?

Personally i would just continue as you have been doing. Excess food on the floor could attract vermin, so i would not put food on the ground.
