Hi my chick has survived the night so this morning i moved him to the brooder, i sprinkled some chick crumbs on the floor and put a little pot full in with him, i also hard boiled an egg and put a tiny bit of that in. Hes picking it up and spitting it out, will he get the idea over the next few days to eat it? does it need to be wet? he seems to breathe quite heavily but brooder temp is at 100 is this normal, do all baby chicks breathe heavily???

If he's panting, it's too hot! 100 degrees is too hot!

Got up this am and he dusnt look too good, il be surprised if hes still with us. Got the brooder temp down, he keeps jumping around then falling asleep. a couple of times i found him on his back, any ideas?

Ok, firstly you should decrease the temp to 70-75 Cs and then feed your chick .

If he's newborn the temp should be 90-95 for the first week. 100 is not that far off. Just make sure he can get away from the heat if he wants to.

Thanks nicole, i feel bad enough all ready, i did read that on a website. He was able to get away from the heat, the light was only over one end of the brooder. Sadly i lost him this evening. Its made me want to give up on the incubation thing but i guess its trial and error at first unfortunately, i guess we have to learn from our mistakes.

Sorry for your loss. I don't think the temperature killed the chick since you said the heat was at one end of your brooder. Sometimes it just isn't meant to be.
