As with all things it is live and learn. Chicks shouldn't pant. At one day old though, they do need more heat. I always give mine a stuffed animal to hide under. I put a wash cloth over it so hiding is easier for them. I also talk to them quite a bit because they do get lonely. I use a standard light bulb over a tote. I use those 5 dollar colored totes from walmart. Not sure what size that is. I put the light at one end the stuffed animal at the other end and the food and water in the middle. You just have to see it they peep a lot..which means they are usually cold. If the tote seems warm to you,then tuck the chick under the "stuffed mama". They don't Have to eat the first day. It is harder to raise one then a couple. I have one in a tote now that I am surprised made it. Raising one is difficult.
Don't give up. I have found the most important thing other than food water and heat is checking on them often. Very often. That way you learn their habits and can tell if their behavior is "off".
