Feeding oyster shell

I bought some of the oyster shell to feed my chickens. So far they pick it up and drop it on the ground, as if the pieces are too big. Dos anyone else have this issue? I did not see any oyster shell with smaller pieces at the feed store.

I have read about people breaking it up (with a hammer, in a bag) for this reason. I guess our oyster shell comes in small enough pieces. They dont eat a lot of it, but they do eat it.
