Hello everyone. I have a qeustion soo everyone talks about how their pigeons love raw unsalted peanuts but mine hardly touch them. I want to know because im trying to get one of my birds tamer. Right now it flys to me on cammand but i want to be able to take outside without it flying from me. My plan was to every once in a while give it some peanuts so it will stay right on or beside me. Thanks for any help

Hi, I'm not too sure what your asking here but any food stuff should work to tame them as long as you hand feed them. With my fantails I give them their treats in a certain dish and they recognize it and when ever they see it they fly at me, so something easily recognizable would help to tame them too.

Hope this helped.

Ok thanks. What do you feed for treats?

I give multitude of different things to try and vary their diet more for them. Suet pellets in all different flavors, egg food designed for pigeon (although cage bird egg food would be fine), layers pellets, crushed fat balls, different veggies like carrots and broccoli chopped or grated, sunflower hears and I usually go for kibbled peanuts as I do not trust the skins on the as the Uk has a problem with them making the birds ill by giving them salmonella and this was found to be in the skins. You can get them tested but I don't like to run the chance.

If your birds arnt use to eating large items like peas or corn, they will not touch the peanuts.
I have a few birds that love peanuts and some that dont, and the ones that dont hate eating large pieces of food. Every bird is different, so find something your birds loves. Mine all love black oil sunflower seeds! Its their favorite treat! Maybe try that out or other little treats to see what he likes.

I’ve never had pigeons but I’ve had many different pet birds. The only one I ever took outside was a Macaw. Too large and heavy to fly and his wings were clipped just in case. I would be scared to death your pigeon would fly away no matter what treat. Many things can spook a bird. If I had to try it, I’d clip the wings just a bit so he could not achieve full flight. Start with baby steps. Small range flights. Some people tie one leg but it’s way to easy to break their small little legs. I find pigeons beautiful. Hope it goes well for you. Good luck

Break up the peanuts in smaller pieces if the bird is not trying the treat. Also some breed of pigeons are more aloof like racing and homing pigeons which are harder to manage as a rule. Exhibition or fancy pigeons might be more of a breed to accommodate your wishes.

Any domestic pigeon (including feral) has a homing instinct, not all as strong as homing pigeon but they all do to a certain degree. That is what allows them to be let outside and come back, much like a chicken can. Pigeons are naturally flock birds and thus if you want this one to stay friends for him may benefit you. He will also need to see outside without being able to fly away so he may see the area around his home and gain his bearings. Treats will only get you half way. It will also depend on what breed he is, and what age he is to say how easy it would be to get him to not fly away. Pigeons are not really like dogs and even if you took it outside it will want to fly.
