I microwaved eggshells a few times, and phoo, the smell! 
I now just keep them in a used plastic bread bag on the counter, crunch the up with my hands while they’re in the bag, and pour them out of the ground. Never had any problems.
I periodically remind myself that they eat slugs and earthworms, straight outta the ground. Still wiggling.
