feeding sunflower seeds

Do you give chicks shelled sunflower seeds or with the shells? I've heard that "black oil sunflower seeds" are very good for the chickens. Thanks,

We give ours shelled.

We grow lots of sunflowers and have been feeding the chicks shelled seeds from what we harvest and don't save for planting next season.
