Feeding two birds with one stone

I spent a good amount of time recently reading though BYC posts about how to get our chicks grass/grit if they don’t have regular access to it (e.g. sprouting seed in a tray and adding to coop). I now have lots of ideas and goals about what I intend to do for the chicks during the times they don’t have access to real ground. However, today, reality (and an epiphany) struck! I’m sure most of you are better at keeping on top of all the various and sundry things there are to attend to in your daily lives. But if there are any kindred spirits out there who sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed about keeping up with the needs and demands of a house, a yard, a family, a job, several gardens and now chickens… then here is a little tip! I was out checking on my first little “flock” (read 3) chicks today and decided to get them some sod. When thinking about where to dig up a little patch of earth I realized I hadn’t yet edged my gardens. Grabbed my shovel, edged a section of garden and put it in the coop – whallah! Feeding two birds with one stone! I think for anyone maintaining flower or vegetable gardens that need edging, and said task isn’t attended to promptly and uniformly, this is an excellent option for offering your chicks a little piece of earth.

Yep, was going to say the same thing, They attack the grass pretty fast and remaining bits dry up and brown quickly. While I'm sure they'd continue to peck at the dirt and whatever little critters happen to still be in there, in the interest of actually getting my gardens edged I would probably replace the chuck every day ;>
