Feeding Wild Birds

Not sure if you’re even still asking about this but I too have noticed a reduction in the wild birds. The last two years it’s been steadily declining, and now this year so far I have not seen a single finch. They were always ravaging the seed and not a one this year.

Here it has been a slow but gradual comeback. Some years better for some species than others.

This has been a better year for the cardinals here, and eastern bluebird. I’ve had my family return and raise two families. I do miss the finches though.

I've noticed less finches lately but over the winter, I had so many at once it was unreal. There were flocks of 50 or more hanging around. But it also could be that raccoons ruined my finch feeders and I haven't replaced them yet.

I saw a flock of wild turkey's passing through, some adults with different sized young.

We found a small snake up in the nest on our shutters. The babies were getting near fledging size so hopefully one or two managed to get away but it was obvious that he had eaten at least one of them

When I came back from the beagle club there was a hen turkey with five third grown poults feeding under the home feeder. That's the first poults I have seen this year.

Turkey hen and five poults are feeding under the bird feeder. I always spill feed in the morning when filling the feeder. She brought 2 buddies along. One is a hen with at least a 6" long beard. I have seen plenty of bearded hens, but never one with such a significant beard.

I have had two Blue Slate hens with longer beards.
