Ok so is it ok if chickens don’t want to eat from their feeder? I bought one and they seem to like eating off the ground better?. Also while I was out cleaning the coop today I noticed that the one hen looks like there is grey color on her fletchers on top of head. Never noticed that before is it normal? New to all this and I’m driving myself crazy!

Those little grey feathers are just some new ones coming in, nothing to worry about! Just some more feathers filling in for winter.

Just don't put so much food on the ground it could rot/spoil.

My chickens knock over, break open, and totally empty their feeder almost daily, I don't even know why I bother with it half the time.

Oh and on the food how much should I be feeding them? There are 4 girls. The neighbors just kinda said oh you will figure it out. Lol I don’t wanna feed to much but also wanna make sure I’m giving enough. Ya I just went out and my big girl Sophia looks like she is getting the grey tipped to. Too me it looks as if she got paint on tips of feathers. Crazy all the stuff there is to learn. Thanks again

I don't think chickens will really over eat. The amount they eat will vary depending on their size, the weather, if they are laying, if they are molting, type of feed, how much they can free range, etc. For my 5 girls I fill a 1 quart feeder about 3/4 full daily and they eat almost all of it. If I check them in the afternoon and all the food is gone, I give them some more, if there's some left, I might fill it a little less the next day. I don't like to have too much food out all the time because then I end up feeding the rodents and wild birds in the area too! The feeder I usually use looks like this and the small one quart size seems to big enough for my 5 chickens.

They won't over eat feed if that's what you are asking. Chickens are very good about self regulating, and will only eat enough to meet their calorie requirements. Feed should be available all day long, to ensure they are getting enough.

When I feed my chickens on the ground I throw out enough to let them eat for about half an hour. Some of the younger girls will leave and come back after the others are done. I feed twice a day.
That being said, they dump the feeder all the time and scratch around in their feed and I just leave it and don't give more until it's gone. I only put out a days worth at a time because the wild birds were eating all the food and my chickens were left hungry.

Ok I have a huge one similar to that one that could feed probably 20 chickens. Lol. I’ll have to go and get a smaller one with only having the 4 girls.

What are you feeding them? I see whole corn on the ground. What kind of feeder do you have, any pics? There is no need to have a small feeder, just because you only have 4 chickens. I have a 5 gallon no waste feeder that I fill every couple weeks for 11 chickens.

I agree with Blackdog. Use a bigger feeder that they can't turn over, and feed a good quality complete feed.
I like the Premier1supplies.com plastic feeder; it helps eliminate wasted feed and has held up very well. I now have four of them!
IMG_0427 (1).JPG It's kind of ugly, but very nice, and it can be hung up also. The metal feeder in the background is another good choice, although the birds can spill more feed out using it.
I feed an all-flock feed (Flock Raiser) with oyster shell on the side, and very limited scratch feed/ corn.
