that's what I hear! I have small dogs, so I've already been thinking along those lines! I never let my dogs out unprotected as we have owls that will swoop right into our yard, among other things! So any chicks that come to live here will definitely have to have security!!

Woot! I'm down in Texas, but I did just what you're doing - my town made backyard chickens legal a year ago, and I lurked and read a LOT. This year we're finally doing it, just got our new chicks and will have a coop built soon. I hope it goes great for you.

My advice is to build a good sturdy coop with extra space before getting chicks.
That extra space will come in handy when they are choosing to stay inside during bad weather.

When you build in your ventilation it helps to make covers or baffles so you can close the ones on the side the wind is coming from. Trust me when I say you don't want to be out in single digit temps rigging a way to keep snow out.
