Prince is my favorite chicken ever. We got him as a day old chick (pure bred blue silkie, though black in color). I thought it was a girl and she was my baby, my little lap chicken. About a month ago she started to crow and we realized it was a rooster. He doesn't crow often and it's not as loud as a normal rooster, but it's definite crowing. We live within the city limits of Fayetteville, NC and you're not allowed to keep roosters. I thought he would be quiet enough no one would notice. However, I had to put bird netting over the top of their 20x20 chicken pen this week to keep them from eating my garden and they are not happy about it! I think his payback is crowing in the wee hours of the morning, and he is making his presence known to my neighbors! The city of Fayetteville changed their ordinance to only allow FOUR hens in backyards (side note my next door neighbors on each side of me: one has 14 dogs and 5 cats and the other has 6 dogs and 8 cats and this is totally acceptable!!!). I am way over my four hen limit, so in order to keep from drawing attention to myself (and the not so nice neighbors behind me), I need to find a home for my sweet boy.
I don't want to put him on craigslist, because there's no way of knowing the type of home he will go to. People see "free" on listings and take it just because. He's had a great life so far here-- lots of love & snuggling, a big backyard he's been able to free range up until yesterday, 2 coops and a big chicken run, and 8 fat hens and some chicks to look out for. It's super important to me that he goes to a GREAT home, where he will be loved and get lots of treats and attention. I don't want him to be with other roosters, as he has always been the only one I don't want him being pushed to the bottom of the pecking order. Also, he has to be outside not kept in a tiny coop and run. He loves to run around and be free. I'm hoping someone on here that loves chickens as much as I do will see this and be able to help me find him a forever home. Thanks so much!
Here are the specs on Prince: He is a blue silkie bantam rooster from Ideal Poultry hatchery in Texas. He was born Nov 6, 2012. I'm not sure on weight, but he's about the size of every other silkie I've seen. Beautiful plumage and super soft. His feathers are black, but in the sun light you can see hints of blue shining through. My birds are all very healthy and were vaccinated for Merek's at the hatchery.
