I’m Eric and just joined BYC, this is my first post since all of my other questions have been answered by searching the forum. I’ll be getting ten 16-week old pullets on May 4th (this is my first attempt with chickens ….. hope to get a mix of Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, and RIR). I live in northeastern CT. My coop is essentially built (6’x8’ with a shingled roof) and I’m now working on the run which will be rectangle shaped (14’x 16’) including underneath the coop. It will have ½” hardware cloth on the 6-8’ walls and a metal roof attached to pulins which will be screwed into the rafters, there will be no sheathing. The run will only be used during the day as the girls will be locked in the coop each night.

My question: is felt/tar paper needed underneath the metal roof to prevent condensation or will there be ample ventilation to prevent it since it is otherwise completely an open structure.

Thanks in advance.

You are asking about the run roof right?
On the run you should not need to put anything under the metal roofing.

In the coop it may need some assistance due to the moisture from the chickens breathing and the poo.
My coop has a metal roof and I did not need to add anything under the metal since I live in a drier part of the U.S. My run has wire on top no roofing.
Some people will basically finish the ceiling in the coop if using a metal roof since they have a lot of humidity already.

Hope this answers the question.
