Female duck can not walk anymore

Even if you don’t need it for her like you said having it is much better than needling it and not having it. That’s great be she is doing so much better.

Yes.

I just hope she will still be okay in the morning...!! (Sadly, I know she could get worse during the night...)

I'm glad Daphne is getting better! I'd just like to add that whenever one of my ducks or geese has problems walking (swollen foot, a limp, etc.) I've found that extra niacin is almost always the answer - the duck/goose is walking normal again within a day or two.

Really good to know!
Thank you for this precious information!!

From what I read, bumblefoot are caused by a Vitamin A deficiency...?
...Thus : do you know if feeding Daphnée cod liver would (also) be a good idea?
(Cod liver has a lot of Vitamin A, but also apparently too much... And I know eating an entire can in one day won't intoxicate a human, but... what about a small animal, like a duck?)

@Miss Lydia would probably know more about this than me :). I've actually never thought of giving a duck cod liver oil (and I didn't know it had a lot of vitamin A )!

I would keep up the epsom salt baths, a couple a day. If it is an injury or niacin deficiency the exercise will help. If bumble foot, the Epsom salt will help. If egg bound, the soaking will help.
I'd agree with this. I have always found that sticking a duck in a nice bath (Luke warm ideally as that can help relax muscles and push an egg boud egg out) helps me to be able to really closely watch and assess them. You can see if they are trying to bath, moving feet and wings normally as they flap, look for treats or accept treats when given without the concern of other ducks.
Mine are used to this treatment and being isolated from the others for short periods of time so they don't get too stressed out over it but if yours does bring a friend for comfort - ideally a hen she gets along with well and who is a fairly calm tempered duck.

Hi!

I have just bathed Daphnée with warm water mixed with Epsom Salt...
...then dried her with papers, before putting Cade Oil on her abscesses...

...And here she is now :

She is doing a lot better compared with yesterday.

...I did not put Baking Soda in her water today, since after thinking about that during the night, I don't think it actually is necessary...
But if ever I see her condition worsening, then I will give her Baking Soda again!

For the time being, I am treating her abscesses first, given her paralysis is going away and I at least know - thankfully - how to heal her feet.

...And to be safe, she is separated from my others animals during the day.
Though she still sleeps with her friends (7 other female adult ducks) during the night, because I don't want her to feel too much alone...

Also, just to say in case it would worry someone : my Daphnée is dirty, but not because I am neglecting her.

Indeed : it is almost always raining where I am, and some parts of the yard have become so muddy BECAUSE part of my grass just died from too much water...
Yes...

And given I had to put all of my adult ducks in such a muddy part of my yard for several weeks... and mating was rough then... yeah : my white ducks just became brown, and could not wash it from their feathers is spite of the fact they have an unlimited access to clean water to bath...

I feel I had to precise it, since I am kind of ashamed (of myself) of how dirty my Daphnée looks like currently.

I read a lot, so I have learned it by chance...

It would seem Cod Liver has too much Vitamin A, so it would be wise to not consume a lot of it in a short time - because apparently, Vitamin A toxicity is a thing.

From what I have learned, you could eat an entire can in one day, but ONLY if you don't eat more of Cod Liver in the next days... or something...?

She looks good to me standing up. You've done well. :clap

I bought Cades oil haven't had to use it yet but do you mix the cade with a carrier oil like almond oil?

Thank you!!

Did you buy the one specifically for chickens?
If so, don't mix it : use it as is.

Speaking of Cade Oil...

I have a Sussex hen that is my Dark Brahma rooster's favorite.
Boy so roughly mated with her she had a big, bloody hole on her side - with a part of the flesh so torn it was falling away from her body...
It was what... one week ago?

When I saw it, I of course tried to wash her wound with water... but it was so bad I could not get the blood and/or dirt out.
So, I just put Cade Oil directly on her wound.

After two days had passed, I put Cade Oil again on her wound.

Her wound was then already crusted, but the part of her flesh that "was going away" was still in the same shape.

But yesterday, when I catched her to put Cade Oil on her wound for a third time, I did not need to : I noticed her wound was totally healed.
There were no crust, no scar... just pink, healthy skin. As if she never was wounded...

Cade Oil is so good.

Thank you!!

No I didn't find cade oil for poultry so I just bought cade essential oil. Thats awesome it did such a good job on healing your hen.

Hi.

I don't think Daphnée suffers from something severe, but what I can finally tell is :
- she looks to be in pain,
- she is not quacking very much,
- her issues, not taking in account her abscesses, seem to be located more severely on her left side than her right, and at the hock joint OR the hips (I still can't tell),
- she started to have foam in her eyes today (first her left eye, then her right one),
- this morning, she weighted 1 kilogram exactly (I don't think she has eaten today),
- her feathers are staying wet and heavy (I have not seen her preening herself today),
- she only walks on short distances when I let her go outside of her run, or then, she tires so easily she falls down on the ground and has a lot of difficulties standing again,
- she can't run,
- today, she has been laying on the straw in her coop almost all day long, instead of staying in the run with her mother, sisters, and friend (I have to keep them inclosed for the time being, because the wind is strong),
- she still has curled feathers on her tail.

...Here is her oil gland :

DSC01008.JPG

I think the gland looks good, and when I have touched the yellowed feathers emerging from it, they were oily...

So, I at least know it is not because of her oil production her feathers stay wet.
(Either she really does not preen anymore, or she has some problems...?)

Sorry : I did answer to you, but I did not notice my post had not been published...!! (I was in a hurry...!!)

To answer your question...
...if I had to use Cade Oil Essential, I would mix it with Olive Oil. For use on skin at least...
For use on hair, I would just mix two drops in a dab of shampoo, as is recommended by La Distillerie des Cévennes.
