I have a smallish back yard in the city with 4 ft chain link on one side and 6 ft chain link on the other. My chickens have never crossed the 6 ft side, but they regularly flew over the 4 ft side (Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, an Australorp, and a RIR), especially when my neighbors put their bird feeder out. I used plastic ties to attach a 2 ft extension (you can barely even see it, but the chickens sure can!), and I haven't had any problems since! Make sure to check for holes in the bottom too, especially when they are little.

I could try and add an extention to the fence at least down the side the neighbors are on. Stupid question; I wonder would tying something like pie pans on it scare them away from the fence or would it attract them even more?

Don't pull them out, heavens, that would hurt.
I would wait to see if they go over, mine rarely do. I personally don't like the looks of a chicken with clipped wings. That's just me.

i clip wings and my girls stay inside a 30" fence. ameraucana, marans and polish.

Ya it all depends, My girls would hop there 5 foot fence to get out of the run. My EE's and leghorns had no problem clearing it and my BO would use her neck to pull herself up the rest of the way. Its funny to watch. Mine i couldn't get to stay in there run. But they wont just the 5 foot fence to get into the backyard where they love to go when the gates are open.

A 4' fence is defently not high enough, a lesson I will never forget unfortenately. My Rottwieler unfortunately caught my Sicilian Buttercup before I noticed she was out. You absolultely need a higher fence than that. we actually used birdnetting to reach up 8 feet. I thought it would look really bad, but if you hang it tight it looks nice.
