Yesterday my son was leaving for practice and saw one of my Production Reds on the outside of the backyard fence. He tried to shoo her back into the yard but she kept avoiding him. I have said to myself I was not gonna clip a wing unless they tried to see if the grass is greener (browner in my case) on the other side. So this morning while they were sleeping I went in and clipped my 6 pullets wings, right side only. They are 16-18 weeks old. I left my 22 week old cockerel alone as he is way too heavy to fly. I even had to add an extra roost level because he could not fly up to top from the bottom one ( about 2' height difference, now 3 roost are 1' higher than the lower one ). Hopefully the off balance of having one wing clipped will keep them in the back yard (18,000sf) that is huge.

-clipping the wings should work providing the fence isn't tall enough for them to leap onto. We have a 6 ft. fence which won't permit the chickens to jump over (with clipped wings). They can still clear about 36 - 42 inches with clipped wings. We had two fliers (OEGB) that actually flew on top of our covered patio. -daughter thought they were crows until she realized they were our chickens..... Clipping soon commenced!

My fence is only about 3' high, but at least no one has gone over today. In fact I have not seen anyone on the patio furniture today, a favorite hang out when "Pig Pen" (my cockerel) is trying to do his thing with them.

3 feet is not a fence. That's more of a border. A Pomeranian could jump that. If that supposed to be a safely barrier you're ask for a problem.
