We are almost done with our 8X10 tractor. It is made out of heavy-duty pcv pipe, so it will be lighter to carry than wood. Is deer netting ok to use for the fencing? TSC doesn't have any light weight poultry netting; all they have is deer netting and chicken wire. Chicken wire would make it a lot heavier. This is just a temporary, day-time tractor, for chickens we want to put outside during the day but who need to be separated from the others for whatever reason. They will not spend the night in there, and in the winter it will be inside the barn.

all of the options you mention will hold in chickens that are not fightin' to get out.

none of the options you mention will delay a predator, such as a visiting dog or daytime raccoon, for more than half a minute. Cities, suburbs, the country, everywhere has predators. If you have an absolutely dogproof fence around your yard, and no dog yourself, it *might* be reasonable to risk the very low chance of a daytime coon.

so, it depends where your priorities are. Me, I'd go with welded wire mesh, 1x1 (which is what my tractor has) or if I felt lucky maybe 2x4.

btw, remember that with a very lightweight tractor you may need special provisions for weighting or otherwise anchoring it down on windy days. You can imagine what happens otherwise

This is not that light weight. I mean, there's no way the wind will blow it over. It's special pipe that our friend who is building it for us ordered. Anyway, we know about predators; we've had our share, and, actually, our dog will help that problem, she considers herself a chick-herd

, and the chicken's friend. But I think you're right about the netting; we will look for heavier wire fence. Thanks for the input.
