What gap size for fencing would keep out a fox?

We have no raccoons or snakes, it's just foxes and rats to worry about. We have had no problem with rats previously, or at least none a terrier didn't solve, and I don't think it would be feasible to modify the run such that rats couldn't get in. Foxes are the major predator.

I have an existing covered chickenwire run, am thinking of putting additional welded wire over it (buried and at a low level). How high would that have to be to prevent the fox getting in?

1 foot underground, and 3 feet over?

And why 1/2 inch? Would other sizes do?

Any heavy wire fencing will do. I have fox in the area and I use 2"x4" 12.5 guage welded wire fencing. Burying wire in not as affective as laying the fencing horizontally on the ground as shown below.

Three feet up the run is enough and a foot or more apron will stop any fox from digging under the run. If your run is permanent you only need to attach the apron to the run and pin the outside edge of the apron down with U shaped pieces of wire. It is not necessary to bury the apron, let the vegetation grow up through fencing and it will bury itself.
