so this spring I plan to move my ducks to another area of the property, their permanent home. I want to use cedar fence posts with welded wire fence on the inside of the posts and electric strands on the outside, the welded wire will be attached to ground, the strands to hot. plan being if a critter tries to crawl through the welded wire and gets between it and the hot strand on the outside of the post he's going to get one heck of a thrill, this would render a racoon at a serious disadvantage as it would be nearly impossible for them to touch the welded wire and not touch the fence strand. would also allow me to keep the grass down underneath the fence sufficiently to keep it from shorting out. question is this: there is much talk about mink fitting through 1" cracks, I can get 48" welded wire fence with 1x1 mesh, I will be needing about 400' of fencing and it seems to average around 200 bucks a roll and you can probably figure double that by the time i have my cedar posts, insulators, gate/hardware etc. if I went to a larger mesh, like a 2x2 the cost would drop, I had considered a large mesh, like page wire, and then a 2' hardware cloth strip around the bottom, but that doesn't seem like much cost savings. I will add to this that my ducks are in a secure coop at night, this would be a daytime predator fence, and I plan to have the top strand of electric at about 5' to dissuade jumping predators.
any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.... like do I need to go 4' with mesh? or would 2' do? etc etc.
TIA
