Fencing question for the goat experts...need opinions/ideas

We raised goats when I was growing up and fenced in about 5 acres of wooded property for them to clear out the underbrush. Well, now I want to do the same on my own property but really don't want to use barbed wire strands. What are some good/easy fencing ideas for goats that I could use in wooded acreage. Thanks so much.

Field fence some call it woven wire some call it page wire fence. It's the best i've found for goats

THat comes in the roll, right? Do you just attach it to T posts? I have a ton of them after I took down a horse paddock.

I used field fence. It works great and yes we attached to T-posts.

We use push in posts and 4 strands of electric tape. We 'train' them to it initially, and since the area we have for them to 'clear' is pretty large, they are satisfied to stay in all spring, summer & fall.

The only time we have difficulty is in winter, when snow shorts the tape ... then they will walk out. So we built a small correl with combo (hog) panels near the barn and they reside in there during the worst of the winter. It actually works out since we have to water them in the winter, as well, since they can't get to the pond (or would simply walk out on it).

If you use field fence (the wire fence with the big holes) be sure to get goats without horns. Horned goats will put their heads through and not be able to come back out because of the horns.

We like dog fencing better (the wire fence with 2" x 4" holes) altho it is more costly.

You might also consider a strand of electric 4" off the ground and then at about waist height to prevent rubbing and climbing.

And yep, just use those T posts...!

Our 'horned' goats have actually learned how to put their horns in and out ... 'Stupid' (wonder how she got her name) took a LONG time to figure it out.

I think Boer/meat goats are easier to contain than the mini devils !

Regular field fence or welded wire(my fav), works good. If it's 4ft high, then I would put electric wire across the top to keep them from jumping it or leaning on it.

Field fence works well with ours. They are not dehorned and never have an issue getting caught.

We used field fencing. If I could do it over I would spend the extra money and get the goat fencing. It has 4 inch squares through out the fence. The field fencing as larger holes at the top and get smaller on the bottem. It cost more and can be harder to find. Be sure and put the fence on the inside of the post. Goats love to rub and can in time push a fence down. Good luck on your choice.
