Which is better chain link fencing or field fencing?

Assuming by 'field fencing' you mean the stuff with, like, 6x12" meshes, the answer is absolutely chainlink.

It is also more expensive and more difficult to work with, though. (You need stretcher bars, etc, and if you've never run chainlink before you might seriously consider having a professional do the job).

We used what is called around here 'welded wire fencing' - i called it field fencing for a long time till i got the vernacular right. Anyway, it has 1"x3" rectangular holes in it. We used 6' high fencing around the run and aproned it with chicken wire 3' up and 3' out to prevent diggers from getting in. So far so good but we're pretty new to this so knocking on wood.

Field fencing usually has smaller holes near the ground and larger holes near the top of it.

Not a good idea for chickens, they can fit through the holes very easily. I have some around my dog pen and the chickens get in with the dogs all the time.

Now if you did like I did, I turned the fence up side down with the large holes on the bottom and the small at the top, it works well once you put chicken wire or hardware cloth around the bottom 3' of the fence.

Field fencing is strong enough to stop a cow so it will easily hold a dog back. But you need to stretch it pretty tight and need strong posts on the end of the fence.

Just depends on how many folks you can find to help. The more the merrier when stretching fence and such.
