Feral cats...need ideas

Unfortunately, these kitties did not appear to be the healthy specimens that the first several (dozens) were. The went to kitty heaven with animal control. We had a couple of new cats move in over the winter and the health of the colony has been going down ever since.

Acepromazine is a short acting tranquilizer that is labeled for use in dogs, but frequently used with horses. Not exactly sure what a lethal dose would be, but even if I goof on the dose, I can think of worse deaths. My understanding, and I maybe wrong, is that ace is a central nervous system depressant.

Our local exterminator takes cases of stray cats. Maybe yours does too.

First: Note to all cat lovers. I like cats but WILD cats are different.
They are not good pets, they have litters after litters (which all turn out wild), and spread disease. Sorry, I'd have no problem shooting them one by one. I have a 22 cal air rifle- no noise!

I do think doping them up is a clever idea, but then what do you do with them? Pay have them put down? You don't want to drop them off somewhere else to be a problem.

You bring them to an animal shelter, they get spayed/neutered and find homes or get put down. That's how I got my cat. She was ferral and is the best cat I've had. I'm glad to hear that desertcat's problem is being resolved. Good luck on the last few!

Great to hear the 'kitty roundup' went well. I believe you made the right choice. Where can I get acepromazine? Because of the bad economy cats are being dropped off left and right. The shelters are really full. Some are in pretty bad shape. My girlfriend has a farm and one morning woke up to a goat lied to her light post with a note. Sad situation for so many people. God bless them all.

I can't speak for other vet clinics but at the place where I worked it was not really restricted. If someone asked for some they got it, pretty much. I imagine if you called a country-ish vet they would be more understanding. Although, since you're just trying to help ferals, most vets should be helpful if you explain your intent.

Ace is also widely used by ferriers to calm horses before trimming feet.

Adrenilin will counteract it or so it seems. We had a horse laying down trimming her feet and as I reached for the file I brushed her ear and she jumped right up. That was fun. Once she settled back down she drifted right back off and I was able to finish her up.

We got the bottle we have from a local vet.

Boy this would be just what I need. I have a family of feral kittens living IN my chicken coop. The mamma had them there, and she is a good cat but skittish too, and all the kittens are feral except one.
We have a place to take them too but no way to catch them. wish there was a tranquilizer that I did not need to contact the vet for, the vets around here do not just give stuff like that unless you have a really good reasona nd I think drugging feral cats would somehow, not be a good reason....LOL.
