FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

We do fine when power goes out. Every one should have a plan to go 5 to 10 days if things close down. What do you really need?

I treated my child for heat stroke and it was in 70s that's a hot summer day. I live in a bush community that means no roads out. It's plane or ferry. Population about 400 with more in summer. I'm in easy Alaska winter 20 to 35 degrees and summer 60 to 75 degrees Lots of rain we are designated a rain Forrest my nearest city is Juneau a 30 min flight with good weather. We have sun low in sky between 10am and 3pm. I lived down in Big Bend NP for 5 years I was more isolated there
My chicken worries is high moisture in coop and last night wolves were howling under my window.
Prob'bly more then you wanted to know lol
Ak rain

No, its just what I wanted to know, puts in perspective what you say about your life and the chickens. I may go to Big Bend again for Thanksgiving, an annual thing with the Sierra Club, but I don't know about living there. If I had money I'd like to have a place in the boonies, remote; but WITH ACCESS to everything necessary in case of emergency. I was in Juneau in July from a cruise and it only wet my desire to go for a long spell. I told friends I was going to see glaciers, grisslys and whales. I was bitterly disappointed because I only saw a whale from far far away and a glacier equally far away. Someday....

Forgot to ask: How do you combat the high moisture in the coop? My backyard swamps when it rains hard and even though I made the coop floor out of cinder blocks making them 6 inches off the ground the wetness still comes in around the edges and wets the pine shavings, keeping everything damp.

It's a whole other world there, huh? Moose!

I forgot that you have deer species that attack humans too. Hats off to all you Alaskans and your tough lifestyle.

Heaven help you if the electric goes down and the animals close in.
How does a "dig" cause a moose to attack?? Oops, this was supposed to go to AK rain. Bee won't mind. : )
Like I said, I'd like to live there as long as I could go home to my too hot existence here when I've had enough cold. You know what would be cool? Like in the movies... trade lives. If I had a tidy house and was not a hoarder I could trade lives for a month or only a couple of weeks. You take care of my animals and I take care of yours and we both have the experience of the other persons life on a small scale. Like in the movies.....

I've raised the level of run w sand and raised coop from run. I'm still struggling I made screen covered hole in rafters it still seemed moist so day time I leave door open a crack. I did worry it got into 20s in coop a few nights ago birds seem fine. There protected from drafts. No heaters. Moisture air needs moved. Floor needs to be higher then water level all year. This my first year w chickens we well see how it evolves ak rain

Oh dog makes moose attach my fingers on phone. :) I would melt in heat you can only take so much off

Lots of ventilation...an open air coop is needed in your climate. Also, deeper litter...the lower levels will wick the moisture from the top layers. You can also try to ditch the area around the coop to divert water from going directly into the coop. Some folks in areas that have big runoff will bank up the sides of their coop and place chicken wire over the banking to keep the soil from eroding, then plant grass seed on the soil.

You loose the "remote " when you have access to all. Just because here the farthest you can drive on paved road is 10 miles don't mean I don't have access. You just have to wait movies go into DVD a and such. Simple pleasures laying on the beach and listening to whales is spectacular. Being safe inside and listening to wolves. Both events rare but enjoyed when happening ak rain

I keep the curtains drawn and run around in my skivies; always have to tell people to wait while I dress when they come to my door. I refuse to pay $300-$400 for AC each month so do without. I have much better things to spend my money on.( Like chickens and their vet bills?) It is one of those things you can get used to. After all, our parents (well mine anyway,) didn't have air conditioning.

This thread is awesome! I have sat here all day reading it, and its various offshoots (fermented pumpkins, chicken murder mayhem). We eat a lot of fermented foods (kefir, yogurt, sourdough, kraut, kimchi, garlic etc etc) so I know that it would be good for chickens and am looking forward to spring and getting my chicks.
