FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Put it in a colorful beach bucket and sell it as a chick starter kit...complete with tiny scoop and feeder.

Do you worry about plastic leaching stuff into the food? I would use glass but with my luck I would break it somehow. That is just how life is at my house. ;) Stainless would get heavy. Maybe not in the size I need though. I think I have a large pot in storage I could use when I need larger quantities.

How much water do you drain off when you feed? Does it matter if you feed the water too?

Is there a chart somewhere that says how much to feed per chicken? I am clueless as to how much is enough for chickens. I free feed my cats and have a dog that I feed twice a day. I know what dogs need, but chickens are a lot smaller than a GSD. ;) I don't want to underfeed. I know I can't over feed, they will self-regulate.
Read back eons on this thread or PM PerchieGirl. No, we don't worry about plastic leaching into the food.

I used to keep my ff fairly wet and would use a fine mesh strainer to feed it dry. I now keep it the consistency of grout and no longer have to strain until I get to the very bottom of my bucket. Some drill holes in their feeders so the water can drain out. I feed 4 LF hens 1/2 cup per day. They get fed twice. Large ration AM, small snack PM.

Buckets of this stuff for guest take-aways at weddings? A photo of the happy couple on the bucket?

The small print...... CAUTION: Do not throw contents of bucket on bride and groom as they leave, could cause bald spots until hair regrows.

Could be used as party favors too. ;)

Someone sent chicks home with the kids that came to their son's birthday party. Bet that went over well with the parents.

Thanks! Is that a 1/2 per hen or for all of them? And that is the total amount for the day not per feeding, right?

Are folks reading that in the Storey Book...that's the umpteenth time I've heard that of late. Yes, you can over feed and no, chickens will not self regulate. Some breeds and some birds within breeds can and will gorge themselves until they have so much fat inside that they have obstructions to egg laying, pendulous crops that form sour crop/impacted crop issues, heart and liver disease, egg bound or internal laying issues, etc. Regulating feed amounts and making sure they get plenty of exercise can help them have long and healthy laying lives....just like any other creature.

For now, feed 1/2 c. of feed per chicken and then tweak it up or down according to body conditioning. They can be fed once per day and however much they can clean up in 30 min. to 1 hr. It will hold them all day and until the next time they eat.
