FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Sounds like you are doing everything right, so not sure why your birds aren't liking it. I have to fight my birds off it every single day just to scoop it into the trough...it's shameful for them to be that eager for it even after all this time and also because they are so very fat right now from stealing feed from the CX chicks. They are just waddling, which I hate to see, and then they are acting ugly at feeding time too, as if they are just starved.

Thanks so much for the information. I don't eat my own, so keeping them around if they don't protect in any way might not work for me. But brooding? What a hoot! I don't have any broody hens, but I could have a "broody" rooster? That's really funny! I will check out the site, at least "Poco Pollo".
Rosemarie, if you read this, I processed my first rooster, but didn't do the lovely job you did. I decided to just skin it and not pluck. What a mess! The next one will be plucked. That roo might as well have been a big Cochin, it had so many winter-type fluffy feathers. It does have a milder flavor than
store-bought and the raw meat hasn't the stronger smell that regular chicken has. : )

Beverly, go to google/books. Search for capon and poultry. Tons of free books. Several on caponizing. Fun reading. I love research.

I looked on YouTube and believe it or not, there is a step by step video on how to do it! Actually, there are several!

Are you talking about the little chinese guy that does it in about 10 seconds? Amazing, right? I'd be thrilled to learn to do it in 5 min or so.

I'll look again. Maybe some new ones put up. Good idea.

I think our FF thread is like a real family where there are quarrels and disagreements and hurt feelings, but also the bulk of everything is done in earnest desires to help one-another. We are a group of many different personalities and come from differing backgrounds but all are here to learn from and help eachother. It's a beautiful thing.

I have a question of my own- my bucket of FF has been going for months and months, but recently it started smelling a lot sweeter and not as sour as it always did. It has definitely changed. I don't see anything different but my nose smells a big difference. The chickens haven't been liking as much either. I only refresh with water and feed, I have been adding small amounts of oats to extend my organic layer feed. I have also dumped food scrapes (non-meat) into it sometimes but mostly vegetable and bread scraps. It's not much though. I decided to start a new bucket last Saturday and have been using up the remainder. Should I dump the old. I have a couple days worth left. Wondering what you think went wrong. It was probably the food scraps huh? I'll do that differently now.

By the way, Bee, showing Humility is a sign of great strength. I'm impressed.

No, it was some gal and she was taking her time, probably for teaching purposes. I just clicked on the first video that was offered. I thinking I put in "Caponizing a rooster" or something like that.

I have a question about ff..... I've had a few health issues in my flock.... Like cocci and some kind of respitory issue.... I can't seem to get cleared up..... Someone suggested I take them off of ff bc they had runny poo.. so I did..... Their poo is normal now... I've been using Nurtena medicated for a few weeks now..Then switch to non medicated when on corid.... I want to start back doing ff bc they loved it!!! I've confused myself with all the switching... I started a batch this morning using Nutrena medicated....but I just read where ferminting dilutes the meds in it.... Would it be ok if I used the ff plus the dry medicated so they would still get some meds? I switched to sand a week ago and I clean coop two timesa day... Plus they go out and roam daily.... Could someone help me please!!

IMO, they're past the point of needing medicated feed. The medication is just a thiamine blocker. If the fermenting process increases B vitamins then, it would tend to negate the effectiveness. There isn't any other medication in the feed.

She says, "Yes, but it was 4 days, and I hadent stirred it for one nite one whole day and the next morning I found that. So im assuming ignoring it was the culprit... my new jar is doing great so far, im trainning myself to stirr... like I needed another chore. that's mold. Did she keep the lid screwed on tight? That's how it appears from the physical evidence in the picture.[/quote]
