FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

It's going to be nearly impossible to feed Joycie regular feed and the rest FF. I'm not sure I see why FF should cause her to stop laying. It's purely coincidental with no other supporting evidence.

The seeds are probably from the FF which has BOSS and scratch grain mixed in with the flock grower.

So, is the consensus that she may have an infection that is causing her to stop laying as well as the weird poop and lack of appetite? Should I start her on a ten day regimen of amoxycilin?

it is my experience that if a bird stops laying in the middle of laying season if possible i would separate her from the flock, make sure she has grit, start her on electrolytes and worm her. then check her over for mites, peeling skin, feather loss and feel her crop is it hard and huge or is it soft and empty? Lastly check her eye's, comb and waddles are they the same color and size? are they pale or discolored?

I have never accused you of lying but in just this one disjointed tirade you have accused or intimated that I am lying or being dishonest no less than 8 times. It seems that In your universe there can be no discussions, you see everything in black or white and your ego will admit no other possibility.

It seems that anyone or everything that you disagree with is false, there can be in your eyes no exceptions, none. On your last point I did give evidence to the tune of 100,000 dead turkey poults and a large but unknown number of chicks, chickens, and other poultry.. And still you say that there is no evidence of what I say can have even a glimmer of truth in it.

As a gauge of your own truthfulness, I suggest that the people here read my last post or two and then point out to me where I ever said or hinted that I was one of your hated school teachers or for that matter any other detested by you educator.

what was the study called and who did it? What was the LD50% and what journal was it published in? I really don't care about opinions i want facts and numbers! if you have hard proof that's fine but i want the cold hard facts to do my own research

I found one scholarly article referencing mycotoxins and fermentation. It basically said that fermenting was one way to ameliorate aflatoxin.

I found several studies that broke down the stages of cereal grain fermentation to show how it does the opposite of what that poster claims. I posted a link to one.

This is extremely important research for parts of the world where people rely on fermentation of cereal grains as a staple in their diet. One reason is to make the food safer. Science shows molds ARE on cereal grains and legumes ... both tradition and science show fermentation is one way to eliminate them.

The poster claiming otherwise has it backwards, either deliberately or due to some error in logic. I suspect the former. I'm sure even that poster understands the difference between a shipment of bad feed ... food that spoiled during dry storage ... being lethal to a whole bunch of birds, and fermenting "good" feed to make it better. We sure have posted plenty of links to science about the benefits of fermentation of cereal grains and/or poultry feed here.

I bought 10 Barred Rocks pullets from My Pet Chicken as day old chicks. I had been following this thread, asked a few questions, and started fermenting a few days before my chicks arrived. They have had no other feed but FF, except for a few veggie treats. They are 9 weeks old and none of them has been sick or even had pasting when they were small. They are actually quite a bit bigger and more mature looking than I would have had expected at 9 weeks. I also have 14 4-5 week old chicks that are the same, one of them did have repeated pasting for a while but has finally outgrown it. He/she is the only one of 24 with any problem whatsoever. Never lost one chick, or had one act sick in anyway and these are the first chicks I have ever owned. My husband has a coworker that he gives a ride to on occasion who has raised quite a few chickens for many years and he has told my husband that he is surprised at how well my chicks have done since I have no history of any experience with chickens. I can only attribute my success to providing for them what they need to be healthy and that has been warmth, clean living conditions and FERMENTED FOOD. I'm very happy that I learned about FF from those with knowledge and experience.

Woohoo. Good going. Kudos.

Mine have never been sick either.

If only "growing" penicillin were so simple ... le sigh.

The articles I came across about the spent brewers grains said the levels of protein and other nutrients in the stuff produced as a biofuel byproduct are threefold greater than the way the stuff starts. But again ... that product is not quite what we're doing here. Just another way of digging into the available research ... cuz you know the biofuel industry has researched the snot out of their by products for marketing purposes ...

I for one appreciate all of your help immensely. It has been less than a year and I have gained so much from your help.

I'm so glad for the positive replies of those who have recently started FF and have spoken up about their success. I'm so glad I have found the information here. It has been a great help to me in my chicken keeping.

I double the kudos to Beekissed!

This FF thing is a HUGE boost to BYC. It has really spun off from here ... I even heard a radio show about it recently. I hope everything possible is done to entice BK to stay and contribute. BYC wouldn't be the same without her. I wish I had the power to properly thank Beekissed for all the help she has given me and my flock. I can't even put it into words.

Of course that extends to everyone who has contributed good questions, good answers, good research, good experiences, and good discussion to this particular thread.
