FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Guess I'm missing something, but I don't see anyplace on that site to plug in a recipe and get nutritional information back.

The site has nutritional values of each kind of feed material and how it is used by each kind of livestock, plus tons of other information on each thing. I find it to be extremely comprehensive and covering a huge range of feeds and feed materials.

Maybe your smart phone has an app for that?

I'm not aware of anything like that.
If you have knowledge of Java and other computer languages, you could take the info from feedpedia and create an ap. Thereby making a million dollars.

Yeah - that's my sticking point - I don't know how to add up all the ingredients and come up with a portion size nutritional info. (nothing "horrors" about it, just lack of knowledge) That feedipedia is nice, but I am limited with what I can get in this area. 9 feed stores, and I can't find field peas anywhere.

Ask around to see if any of them will order some. They don't carry it but they could easily get some with their next feed/seed order. Just make sure it is intended for feed and not seed, otherwise it will be treated with fungicides.
I use Austrian peas but Maple peas are a little cheaper and Trapper peas are cheaper yet.

That said, making your own feed by mixing ingredients that you buy by the bag will cost WAAAY more than buying chicken feed and you'll still have to add a vitamin/mineral mix and possibly even some synthetic lysine or methionine to get all the nutrients a chicken needs.

I use Countryside also......I have had to learn only to do what they will eat in a day......for some reason Countryside has a lot of fish meal in it......does it smell like pickled eggs?  If it does, it's okay....promise....feed them, they love it.....

I was in the Countryside store the other day checking out their feed. I would love to use organic. When I asked about fermenting I was told by their employee that their feed could not be fermented. I did not ask why. So was he mistaken as people on this thread ARE fermenting it? I wonder why he said that and I wonder why I didn't question him. I am a newbie so I guess I just thought he had to be right and then I saw on this thread that some people do ferment it.

Organic is much more expensive and I thought if I fermented it that it would be healthier and less costly. Any advice?

Ferment it! Your hens will love it! So will your pocket book! Come to this site for information . . . . Our experience is that feed stores don't pay their employees for what they know......
