FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I have a neighbor that home brews beer about every 2 or 3 weeks. He just brought me a 5 gallon bucket full of his spent grains. How often and how much can I feed to my chickens?

I recently got a supply from the local winery. From my reading, I feel confident in giving them up to 20% of their ration in the spent grains. If you do a google search, you'll find lots of info. The girls love them. I mix it right into the fermented feed. I've frozen some, have an un-touched 5 gal pail frozen on the front steps, and have fed some out. You can dry them, use them right away, or freeze them. Otherwise, they'll quickly spoil. Some folks actually use them to make breads and other items. I down loaded a nice recipe for dog treats... and I don't even have a dog!

I just gave a new batch of chicks some FF for the first time and they LOVED it. They are between 1 and 2 weeks old. The littlest one has had pasty butt problems for the entire week I've had them. I have done EVERYTHING known to man to help it. Hoping this is the magic cure!!

All mine got FF from day one last spring. Out of 24 chicks only one got pasty butt. It was somewhat of a chronic problem. I probably washed his but a total of 6 times. He outgrew it and is now the father to several chicks I recently hatched.

I never have pasty butt when feeding FF :) Good luck!

Does anyone make fermented food WITHOUT layer feed? I am looking int going non GMO and I think easiest way would to just buy organic, non GMO grains and ferment it. Would this be enough? would i need to add nay vitamins? My chickens do free range. Although right now they refuse to as we have snow but I am hoping within the next few weeks we start seeing some grass.
