FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Nope, I could never turn out that much corn in a garden his size and with my soils. Bought that fresh picked that morning from a local farm stand....very sweet, very large ears and better than I could grow it myself. I doubt if it's organically grown like my own but it's a huge step up from store canned corn in flavor and freshness.

Will be doing the same this year as my corn is again really pitiful....might get a few small ears off it. Mostly it's good for shading my melons and as trellising for beans.

I steam, scoop, strain, and pack in bag. Because there is no consistency to pumpkin pulp, the only 'safe' way to can pumpkin is in cubes. That really stinks, but does make sense. Usually my frozen pumpkin is in my house freezer and not my meat freezer. I really need to plant some pumpkin next year. It's one of the things I actually use a lot of.

Although..... once upon a yonder, I did can some pumpkin butter and it was fine. But we ate that *fast.*

You know what, that makes sense since they have no acidity. I've always just stored them whole so I didn't consider that part of it.

I get around the acidity issue with the sweet corn by placing a thick slice of tomato on top of each jar prior to sealing. We don't pressure can it either, but water or steam bath it. The only time we've ever pressure canned corn it came out a soggy, brown looking and tasteless mess, which is why most folks freeze corn instead of can it. My granny told us about the tomato and how to water bath can it 40 yrs ago and we've been doing it that way ever since. Comes out of that jar tasting like one just cut it off the cob.

I'd be all over that if I could find it priced relatively ok. Sheesh.

This might be a silly request, but would some of you mind posting pics of what type of dish/feeder you use to "serve" fermented feed to your chickens? I know not to put it in a metal feeder, and I assume it's best fed fresh each day and not a self-dispensing type like you would regular feed.

That's an easy one...if you look to the right and top of the thread on the page you'll see something called a "gallery" for this post~says "Recent pictures posted to this thread" and you can click over there to "view all" and you'll see all the feeders ever posted to this thread. Many different kinds and types, from DIY to things people bought.
