So sorry to hear about your chickens and that poor ferret! Wow! What neighbors! You should invite them over for tea! hehe

He is adorable!

I removed the silkies from that coop and put them into the 8' x 8' coop on our hill, it needs a new floor and roof, but it is fine for now. I am going to fix the coop they were in by putting dirt in it to build it up a little more. Now I have an empty 8' x 4' coop, time for more chickies!

I am appalled at your neighbors! Why do they even have ferrets if they are a nusiance to them? Maybe you can kindly suggest to them that they relinquish their "nusiances" to a ferret shelter that work on finding them nice homes?

I am so sorry for the loss of your chickens. I am sure Shadow was only protecting your chickens from the ferret. I in now way believe this was the ferrets fault, nor your dogs fault, but the fault of negligent pet owners (your neighbors).

eta. note to self, use spell check!

Yes I agree as well quail, this was their last ferret, as the other 3 have already died one way or another, I think they purposely let them loose because they don't want to care for them. I really hope they don't get anymore. We are very lucky to have Shadow as a protecter of both us and the chickens. I really don't blame the ferret, he was probably very hungry and he decided he wanted to eat poor Mr. Peeps head.

my experience with ferrets... they are fun & mischeivous. They love to play and really can be a handful at times. I had a ferret who gave birth to a liter of twelve! Only six survived. It would take me an hour or more to clean their cages every day.

I entered a ferret in a ferret show and he took 10th place (out of 10) and I was so proud!

They can play rough and their play bite is painful. I also was bitten once when I reached for food during a meal time... I was just going to move it over to clean a spot ... MIStakE. She really hung on and it took several swats on her nose (like a dog) to get her to release. I was always told never to allow them to have meat... wouldn't like it any way... because of that possibility that they would seek it out and bad things would happen...

I was quite shocked about your story. The possiblity I guess is there, but your story was very disturbing when compared to my experience of owning and knowing hundreds of ferrets. But like some bad dog owners, sometimes ferrets can be treated wrongly and then act accordingly.

Ferrets are relentless and I believe they would take on an animal much larger than themselves. I used to own ferrets and they can be very aggressive, determined and unstoppable. As heartbroken as you may feel for the ferret, your dog probably saved you a lot more dead chickens.
