I have had laying RR hens for about a year now, I wanted to get in to hatching but have never done it...

I have a RR Rooster,

Stupid question, Do i just cage the rooster with a few hens and then eventually ill get fertile eggs?

or is there a specific breeding time/season to follow?

I guess im confused by if a hen lays eggs on her own, when she gets with a rooster how long does it take to get the fertile eggs in her system to over come the non fertile yoke...

If the roo has been around the hens they are likely already fertile. Just let him out with the hens. Takes about a week.

First let me say

2nd, hen + roo= fertile eggs, check in about a week for fertility
If you don't care whose the daddy/mommy just put them all together. if you want a certain hen/roo when put those two together. Are your roos not in with the hens?
any time a year will work.
PS you can eat fertile eggs. incase you didn't know

the roos and hens are together...

I guess the question was in the direction of how do i check the fertility of the eggs?

just assume the are fertile with them being togther?

thanks for the replies...

You can check them. Crack them open and look for a white bullseye on the yolk. Just a white spot...called a blastodisc...means not fertile, but if it has distinct bullseye pattern it is called a blastoderm and is fertile.

Open an egg... If there is a white tiny speck dot it is infertile and if there is a ring or donut shape around the tiny dot it is fertile... You can also incubate for a few days and then look for veins... Good luck...
