Ok, so I tried to get a good picture but I have no idea how to take it without the glare... so here is what I got...is it fertile or not? I have highlighted the spot but it dont show as good in the picture...It is more prominate in real life.... I would say yes.

Hi,
newbie here...
how can I tell?

I assumed my rooster was a dud last year cause the hen DID sit on a few full nests of eggs, but they never hatched...
but now I'm thinking they just didn't get sat on right...

I have three CooCoo Maran hens, and one Coo Coo rooster....
they are a happy crew...

they are at least three years old now tho, can they lay fertile eggs?

I borrowed an incubator and want to hatch some Welsummers, we had those two years ago and loved them, but the dog next door had them for a treat... well mostly he just used them for shake toys... (don't get me started... ) but he'd gone now...
and I keep them locked up all the time now... sad.

anyway.... I wondered if I tried to incubate some eggs if they might hatch?
and how to tell...
I'm showing my stupidity... and the heartyness of my chickens as they are still alive under my ignorant care. :-)

Well I don't quite understand it either but I will explain.

If there is a noticeable white spot on the yoke it is fertile, on a infertile egg it is really hard to see. I have never heard of a dud roo before maybe your hens just did not sit right. I say toss em in the bator !

Oky doky then!
The bator it is!
should be fun in any case...

I guess the other hen can stay, she doesn't lay the chocolate speckled eggs so I'll know which hers are... and only incubate the Maran eggs...

Thanks everybody! I thought it was but I wanted to make sure.
